Description:
The exhibition "Multiple City" shows current urban developments worldwide as mirrored in central urban concepts of the past 100 years. Their juxtaposition and inter-relationship with leading historical and contemporary ideas illustrate and explain the complex and multi-layered developments of urban planning. Exhibits span the years from the historic garden city at the beginning of the 20th century through the city landscape concepts of the early post-war period to today’s „Urban Landscapes“, from the „New Towns“ of the 1960s to the current establishment of cities in China and the United Arab Emirates, from the leading ideas of a „mobile city“ through a „car-compatible city“ to the modern „Telepolis“ of a digital era, and from the „pleasure city“ of a global consumer landscape to the strategy of branding, thus seeing a whole city as a trademark. Urban structures are subject to permanent transformations, new phenomena appear which, at the same time, can be a product of traditional strategies. These phenomena are heterogeneous, there is neither one manifestation nor one strategy in dealing with the city of today: MULTIPLE CITY.

By means of sixteen different subjects, urban planning can be experienced as a fascinating debate in which we are all embedded. Original plans and models document the historical town concepts by means of international examples, comparing them with current changes of urban spaces, facilitated as a photo documentation. In the exhibition and publication, in discussions and a series of films, urban planners, architects, artists and scientists debate issues of the contemporary city in its multiple forms in cooperation with the Munich film museum. The exhibition is a coproduction of the Architekturmuseum and the Department for Urban and Regional Planning at the TU München.
